Leviticus 25:24 sets forth an operating principle in God’s economy: “the land is mine” Because the land is God’s, it must be handled in terms of His Law. God’s perfect order much be established by covenant-keeping man. Immediately following this declaration of absolute ownership by God, the laws of the kinsman-redeemer are given. The purpose was to perpetuate the name of a brother in the land of Israel. Given the historical context of Israel during the book of Ruth (when man were setting aside God’s Law and asserting their own autonomy), not everyone was following God’s guidelines for the kinsman-redeemer. Boaz, however, was faithful to God’s law in a society which was rejecting it.
Christ is our kinsman-redeemer. He perfectly completed the work only typified in the narrative of Ruth.
